Building Your Child's Toolkit

How our kids explain a Chill Zone:

A chill zone is a designated safe space where someone can go to calm down, take a break and manage their emotions when feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated or upset.

Why is it important?

This can support a child in everyday life by giving them a go-to strategy when big feelings come up, helping them calm down and reset before going back to class, activities or playing with friends.

How does it help?

This is especially helpful for kids aged 6–12 in our demographic, as sensory overload, emotional meltdowns and overstimulation are common experiences at school and at home, and having a physical or mental “chill zone” gives them a concrete tool to self-regulate without feeling embarrassed or in trouble.

Build a Chill Zone at home with your child!

Help your child design their own calm-down space with cozy seating, sensory tools, favorite books, and low lighting. A go-to spot when big feelings need a safe place to land.

What to include:

  • Cozy seating (bean bag, floor cushions, or soft blanket)

  • Sensory tools (fidgets, squishy toys, stress balls)

  • Weighted blanket or stuffed animal

  • Noise-canceling headphones or calming music

  • Soft or dim lighting (fairy lights, lamp)

  • Calming visuals (photos, posters, or nature scenes)

  • Favorite books or quiet activities (coloring, puzzles)

  • Breathing tools or visual timers
